Lauren Madden has worked as a science educator at The College of New Jersey since 2011. She holds a B.A. in Earth Sciences- Oceanography from the University of New Hampshire, an M.S. in Marine Science from the University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from North Carolina State University. Madden advocates for scientific literacy and the health of our planet through teaching and learning, working with both preservice and practicing teachers. Over the past decade and a half, her research has been supported by grants from the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, National Science Foundation, and US Environmental Protection Agency. She is currently the principal investigator on an NSF-funded Robert Noyce Teaching Fellows grant supporting 24 K-5 teachers in developing as STEM teacher-leaders. Madden has written, edited, or co-edited a total of six books and more than 50 peer- reviewed journal articles and book chapters. She was named the 2021 Outstanding Science Teacher Educator of the Year by the Association for Science Teacher Education. In recent years, her work has focused most closely on K-5 climate change education. Her recent book, Climate Change Education Across Disciplines K-12: New Jersey and Beyond, highlights contributions from 42 authors. Beginning in January 2026, Madden will serve as the field editor for Science and Children, the National Science Teaching Association’s elementary level journal. Dr. Madden’s expertise in climate change education has been featured prominently in many media outlets including the The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, NPR, and the Star-Ledger.
